Copyediting and Proofreading
Getting your manuscript ready for publication
These services are charged per hour rather than by word count, as per the industry standard. I’ve provided a sample price for each service, but this is only for illustrative purposes. To receive a quote for your manuscript, please send me a 5000-word sample of your work, ideally from the middle of your novel rather than the opening chapters.

I will read your manuscript carefully for:
errors of spelling, grammar and punctuation
clarity and sense
continuity
consistency of style and voice.
I will NOT offer any feedback on content (structure, pacing etc.) unless there is an issue with continuity or factual errors that the average reader would be likely to notice.
You will receive:
your corrected manuscript with changes tracked in Word. Errors will be corrected, and any ‘queries’ (points of continuity to check, suggested rephrases where clarity or voice might be affected for the reader, etc.) inserted as comments.
a 30-minute video call to discuss anything further or to answer your questions.
Pricing
Copyediting is charged at £35 per hour, which is based on CIEP suggested minimum rates.

This is an economical option if you want to self-publish your work but don’t have the available funds to invest in a full copyedit or proofread. I will read through your manuscript once, and highlight the sorts of errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation that the average, well-informed reader might notice on first reading.
You will receive:
a hand-annotated pdf of your manuscript with the most obvious typos and errors highlighted.
Please note: This is NOT comparable to a copyedit or professional proofread. These two processes take significantly longer and involve reading and rereading the manuscript with focussed attention to detail and, in the case of copyediting, careful cross-referencing between chapters to check continuity and consistency of style. A proofread of a 70,000-word can take up tow two weeks (depending on how much correction is needed) while a copy edit can take twice as long. This is why these services cost what they do.
Pricing
This service is charged at the same rate as proofreading (£30 per hour) however, for the reasons discussed above will take significantly less time to carry out. To give you an idea of the cost, a manuscript of 70,000 words with moderate errors would take around 7 hours to read through attentively and annotate, so £210.
